Arsene can't give it a rest

Arsene can't give it a rest - 11 Nov 2007

WORKAHOLIC Arsene Wenger says he is addicted to the pressure of football management and NEVER takes time off from the job.

The Frenchman gave most of his young Arsenal stars a rest for this week’s Champions League trip to Prague ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash with Reading.

But he has no intention of giving himself a breather and is already making plans for next week’s international break.

Wenger, 58, said: “I’m a marathon runner — I don’t need a rest.

“Whenever I go on holiday I’m quite lost but luckily there is always some work for me to do.

“Even on the beach I’ll be on my phone arranging transfers, chatting to contacts or making plans for the coming season.

“It’s the way I am, so even though my team does not play next week, I’ll be working every day.”

The pencil-thin Wenger keeps himself in physical shape with daily gym visits and regular runs around Arsenal’s Colney training ground.

But he admits staying in peak mental condition is more of a problem.

He said: “You try to regulate the constant stress but I’ve no idea how much damage it’s doing to me.”

And Wenger believes the demands of the job will become more stressful as the financial cost of failure grows.

With four top-flight managers axed already this season, the signs are there.

The Gunners boss added: “It is a real worry that clubs are becoming more impatient and more inclined to panic.

“The rule at the moment seems to be if a manager loses three games in a row then he is sacked. It’s a dangerous and explosive situation.”

Yet Wenger insists in 11 years he has never taken his job for granted.

He said: “I live with the knowledge I’m in a job where you go if the team is losing and you don’t find solutions.”
