Premier League - Degen out with broken ribs

Liverpool full-back Philipp Degen will be out of action for up to two months after breaking two of his ribs in the Carling Cup win over Crewe Alexandra at Anfield on Tuesday.

The Switzerland international was making his Liverpool debut in the 2-1 win over the League One side following his summer move from Borussia Dortmund.
Degen clashed in the air with team-mate Sami Hyypia as they rose to head a high ball and had to be replaced by Jamie Carragher with little over 15 minutes remaining.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez revealed the injury to the club's official website by saying: "He has broken two ribs. He is very unlucky."
The Spanish coach said after the match that he had intended to bring on striker Robbie Keane in order to strengthen his attack in the closing stages, but Degen's injury prevented the Irish forward from coming on to try and score his first goal for the club.
Benitez said: "We brought (striker Fernando) Torres on to try and score the third goal - every competition is important so we were trying to create more chances.
"I was thinking the same with Robbie Keane but we had a problem with Philipp Degen so I was not able to put him on earlier to put him in a position to score."
