GERRARD PRAISE FOR EX-RED HESKEY
Steven Gerrard has praised the performance of Emile Heskey after the former Liverpool striker returned to international football with an impressive display against Israel at the weekend.
With Peter Crouch suspended, Heskey staked his claim for a place against Russia on Wednesday night with an all action display as England coasted to a deserved 3-0 victory.
Gerrard said: "I know him inside out and Emile is a player's player.
You appreciate what he contributes when you're on the pitch. He does a lot of hard work that goes unnoticed.
"He caused Israel a lot of problems. I thought we picked up lots of little bits of possession off him against Israel, he put in a positive performance."
Despite the size of the victory, Gerrard insists England will have to improve in time for the visit of Russia in midweek.
"We were positive about Saturday's performance but the important thing is not to get carried away," he added.
"We realise Russia is going to be a tougher test so we need to forget about Israel now. But we can take the positives from that game and build on it and hopefully get the same outcome." |
