FINNAN: THE BOSS KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING
Steve Finnan last night launched a passionate defence of Rafael Benitez's much talked about rotation policy and insisted: "The manager knows what he's doing."
The Irish international admits players want to play week in week out for the Reds, but he accepts Benitez's past record proves his methods reap long term rewards.
"You only have to look at the manager's CV," said Finnan. "Judge him by the trophies he has won, and they show he is a top manager. He knows what he's doing.
"It (rotation) is obviously a subject that is raised a lot, and questions are asked, but it freshens up the squad, keeps players on their toes.
"If a player is unhappy because he is not playing, that's only natural because you want to play in a lot of games.
"But with so many games at club level, and with internationals, it could be over 60 games per season.
"The manager calls the shots. You have to get used to it, and at a club like Liverpool, you are going to have to get used to it.
"So it's only right to freshen things up, and I'm sure everyone is behind the manager."
Finnan is currently with the Irish squad preparing for their Euro 2008 must-win Croke Park double header with Germany on Saturday and Cyprus on Wednesday.
Despite the odds being stacked on Ireland qualifying for next summer's tournament, he insists Anfield old boy Steve Staunton should stay in his job as national team boss.
"For continuity it's important he remains in charge. That's one of the key factors – to give someone time to get things right," said Finnan.
"It's been a difficult job for him considering where we were when he took over as we had not qualified for the previous two major tournaments.
"There was a period of change and I feel he has done well. But he has to be given time and hopefully we can progress. I do feel we'll be much stronger going forward." |
