Nicolas Anelka scored his first goal for Liverpool as stand-in-boss Phil Thompson led the Reds into the fourth round of the FA cup with a convincing victory over Birmingham City at Anfield.
The home side dominated from start to finish and after Michael Owen put Liverpool in the ascendancy with two goals in the opening 24 minutes, Anelka struck to net his maiden effort five minutes from time and seal an easy 3-0 victory.
However, the holders failed to reach round five of the competition after they were narrowly beaten 1-0 at Arsenal, as Arsene Wenger's side avenged their cup final defeat at the Millennium Stadium, eight months earlier. |
