Arsène Wenger intends to ask striker Emmanuel Adebayor if he had the chance to join Manchester United this summer.

Friday morning’s newspapers carried quotes from the Arsenal frontman saying he had been offered the option to quit Emirates Stadium for Old Trafford during the close season. It was news to Wenger as the 23-year-old is a crucial cog in his Arsenal machine.

"I'm completely surprised,” he said. “And I would first like to check with him it's true.

“If it's not Adebayor then I think it's his agent. He had a contract at that time as well and I have never been approached by Manchester United. [Anyway] he has extended his contract here since then."
