Manchester United target Luis Fabiano has been labelled the ‘bad boy of Brazilian football’ following a string of brawls in his homeland. Here’s what you need to know:
1) Luis Fabiano Clemente was born on November 8, 1980 in Campinas, Sao Paulo.
2) He started out at local Campinas club Ponte Preta, but made his name after signing for successful Série A club Sao Paulo in 2001.
3) While at Sao Paulo, Fabiano became infamous for fighting on the pitch. His most notorious bust up came during a Copa Sudamericana match against Argentina’s River Plate in 2003. Our hero karate-kicked a member of the opposition just below the neck, sending his victim to hospital.
4) Fabiano made his debut for the Brazilian national team in 2003, and was part of the 2004 Copa America winning side.
5) He’s since won a total of 18 caps for Brazil and scored eight goals, including this one from an astoundingly acute angle against Uruguay.
6) FC Porto signed Luis for a fee rumoured to be in the region of 10m Euros before the start of the 2004/05 season.
7) The star had a troubled first season, both on and off the pitch. In March 2005, his mother was kidnapped by gunmen in Campinas. Police eventually rescued her 61 days later.
8) A move to La Liga and Seville in the close season proved much more productive, with Fabiano going on to score 39 goals in 79 appearances.
9) Middlesbrough fans may well remember the one that set Seville on their way to a 4-0 UEFA Cup Final victory in Eindhoven.
