Denver has traded All-Star guard Allen Iverson to Detroit in exchange for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess, a league executive with knowledge of the talks said.
Billups helped guide the Pistons to the Eastern Conference finalsduring each of his previous six seasons in Detroit. He grew up inDenver and played 58 games for the Nuggets over two seasons from1998-2000.
McDyess has had two previous stints with the Nuggets, and began his career with them in 1995.
Iverson was traded to Denver in December 2006, but was not able to help Carmelo Anthony lift the Nuggets out of the first round of theplayoffs in his two seasons there.
The trade gives thePistons salary-cap flexibility at the end of the season. Iverson’scontract, which pays him $21.9 million this season, expires in July.
Billups is owed $36.3 million over the next three seasons and has anadditional $14.2 million team option for 2011-12. McDyess will make$6.8 million each of the next two seasons.
There is one sticking point to the deal, though. McDyess does notwant to go to Denver, and a source close to him says "he will not puton a Nuggets uniform" and may opt to retire.
Because of McDyess'sobjection, the Nuggets may waive the mandatory physical each player ina trade must take in order for the league to approve any deal. McDyessmay be seeking a buyout of the remainder of his contract (two years,$13.6 million).
The deal has not been finalized but the teams are holding a conference call with the league.
In three games with the Nuggets this season, Iverson is averaging 18.7 points and 6.7 assists.
Inthe Pistons' two wins this season Chauncey Billups is averging 12.5points, 5.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists, while Antonio McDyess isaveraging 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 19 minutes per game.
Theblockbuster deal comes two games into the season for Detroit. ThePistons have been a model of consistency in recent years, but they weredetermined to change their core following a third straight exit fromthe Eastern Conference finals last summer.
The Pistons play atCharlotte Monday night. The Bobcats are coached by Larry Brown, who ledBillups and the Pistons to the 2004 NBA title and also guided theIverson-led Philadelphia 76ers to a spot in the finals in 2001.
Billupsreturns to familiar surroundings -- he was born in Denver and played incollege at Colorado. McDyess also will be enjoying a homecoming ofsorts, having been a Nugget from 1995-97 and 1998-02.
