An Ian Rush goal seven minutes from time rescued Graeme Souness' FA Cup holders from a humiliating third round exit against Second Divison Bolton Wanderers at Burnden Park.

The legendary forward netted his 39th FA Cup goal for the Reds to earn a 2-2 draw and a replay they scarcely deserved after Steve McManaman's shot was spilled into his path by Bolton keeper Keith Branagan.

It capped a superb recovery after a torrid first-half display saw the Reds trail the hosts 2-0 at the interval and it could have been far worse, such was the dominance of the Trotters.

But it was a different story in the second period and substitute Ronny Rosenthal sparked the revival when he raced clear on 57 minutes. His curling shot rebounded back off the post and into the path of the hapless Mark Wistanley who touched the ball into his own net in his attempt to clear the danger.

It set up a grandstand finale and although Rush saved Liverpool's blushes late on, it would serve only to delay their fate, as Bolton shocked the football world with a superb 2-0 victory at Anfield in the replay 10 days later.
