REINA: VICTORY WAS FOR THE FANS

Pepe Reina today dedicated Liverpool's final home victory of the season to the fans who have stuck by the club throughout a difficult campaign.

Despite a tough few months off the field, Reina is delighted with the backing the fans have given the players during a year which has seen the Reds establish themselves in the top four in the league and also qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Fernando Torres' winning goal yesterday secured the club's twelfth home league success of the season and Reina feels it was a fitting way for the curtain to be drawn on another Anfield campaign.

"We wanted to win the game for the fans," he said. "Their support has been incredible again and it was important that we won our last home game for them.

"We were all disappointed to go out in the Champions League but the players showed a lot of character to bounce back from that defeat and win this game."

Torres' goal was his 32nd of the season and his 23rd in the league, taking him level with Ruud van Nistelrooy's record for goals scored in a debut season by a foreigner in English football.

As well as drawing level with Roger Hunt's record of scoring in eight straight league games at Anfield, Torres has now also moved to within two goals of registering the best ever debut league season by a player in Liverpool's history.

A brace at Tottenham next weekend on the final day of the season will see him equal the record of 25 set by post-war hero Albert Stubbins.

"You have to remember that this is Fernando's first season in England so he will improve," said Reina. "As a player you are always learning and always looking to get better and that will be Fernando's goal for next season.

"English football is different but he has adapted really well, better than anyone could have expected, and if you look at the number of goals he has scored you can see he has done a good job."
